Default Unrealistic Difficulty!!!!

I have been playing Guild Wars since July of 2005. I have purchased all of the new games, as well as the new expansion. I’ve been looking forward to “Eye of the North” ever since I read about it. I enjoy GW immensely but I have to tell you that I am also VERY FRUSTRATED!!

With every new game, I’ve grown more and more irritated at the unrealistic difficulty in certain areas. I understand that there has to be a degree of challenge, but the game is becoming 90% aggravation. The quests in the dungeons are next to impossible to complete. Within 2 minutes the entire party has a -60% death penalty. The foes are not only unrealistically ultra-powerful but there are times that I’ll attack a group of 5 and within seconds every red dot on the mini-map is drawn in and ‘suddenly’ I’m fighting 30. And that’s a “lovely” experience if you happen to be near a resurrection shrine. Because the AI isn’t smart enough to Rez away from the foes…So I get to experience the “joy” of getting slaughtered 50 times.

I have tried several quests 4 or 5 times only to quit in frustration. I’ve tried with henchmen and I’ve tried with real players. I’ve yet to complete them.

I’m at a point where I’m about to quit.

I battered the crap out of my keyboard today doing a dungeon that was way too overpowered in my opinion, providing only one exact way to get around the problem. For a few moments, I was truly about to tell ANet to kiss off, yup, so I walked out into real life.

It worked out, but man was I mad. I've been through all campaigns, and played many other games so for me to take my frustration out on an animate object is pretty sad and bad.

No worries though, I put my keyboard back together and got through the dungeon in question.

Be less bad at the game? Most people don't have much trouble playing through the game.

If you're running healing breeze and mending and insist on not changing your bars, good luck.

maybe you could tell us what quests youre having trouble with. that way, instead of ranting and raving [albeit there is a ton of that on these forums], the "community" could suggest builds etc. that might help.

They can be very challenging, but certainly not impossible. They take much more thinking and strategy than the standard "Charrrrrrrge riiiight innnn!!!" tactic that seems to have become the norm.

Powerstone of Courage FTW

I have run into some roadblocks and difficult situations, and yes, I have done my share of keyboard-pounding. But if I would have given up and said F-it today, I would not have this lovely Murakai's Blade, which I've wanted since I first saw it.

Think about what you're having trouble with, then change your build and hero builds to counter that.

"You're doing it wrong" ... "Be less bad" OMFG! Wow, you guys are a great help. sheesh! Mayhap you could offer some encouragement rather than being; what's the word I want here....USELESS!

Anyway, back on topic. Nw, what dungeon are you trying to do and what are you taking team-wise? Perhaps if we know what you're trying to do and what you're using we may be able to help you. Some dungeons are a pain in the arse, and some of them feel like you can't complete them, but with patience, persistance and useful input I'm sure some of us can help get you through. =)

I just did Frostmaw's for the first time and that was quite the challenge (3 RP, 5 heros) - tough, but not unbeatable. Yeah, we wiped a few times, but we learned a few things along the way that will make our next run through go much better.

It really does help to know what you're facing going in, that way you can prepare for it and bring the appropriate counters to your enemies' attacks. But if you don't, it doesn't take long to discover what you need and then adjust accordingly

I have to agree. The entire EotN expansion is doable with h/h. You might just need to look at your builds and choice of hench more closely.

I agree wholeheartly. I've been working on a suggestion post that addresses just this very topic, but let me put some initial ideas down now since we've got this thread started.

Originally, part of my semi-annual suggestion thread I recently posted I was going to lambast Anet for the difficulty level of the mobs in the North Shivs following the head start weekend. I changed my mind after I finally realized that I could actually use many of the tatics taught in the various tutorial areas of the three campaigns - and they even work!!! However, some re-balancing is indeed needed, especially when it concerns the Dungeons.

Since there is no current Hard Mode for EotN (nor should there be a separate mode for a simple expansion), too much of it thus far feels like a solely Hard Mode focus. One thing I fault Anet for not correcting over the last 28+ months is the fact that combat is basically a war of attrition using DOT tatics. With this model, in order to make advanced areas of the game seem more difficult, the power of the mobs and bosses is ramped up exponentially, and now it has reached a point to where a fully outfitted character or hero is taken down with 2-3 hits from a monster, and just to make things even tougher, the slightest misstep will cause two or three other separate mobs to swarm you, resulting in a total party wipe in less than a minute. This is not to mention that little area where the rabbits are, then up appears about two dozen Vettiens or whatever the heck they are called - I really appreaciated that near instantaneous party wipe. Thank God I didn't decide to bring my Survivor charcter to EotN first.

To me, the Death Penalty is little more than a annoyance and time waster. Just today, I took a Derv and Para through Icedome and had several total wipes (even with 2 monks and an MM in the party) simply from being overwhelmed with foes. At that point, the only choice was to restart (loosing the near hour it took me to get to that point), or to continue on and suffer through several more party wipes on the way to Copperhammer, thus increasing the overall time the trip took. Sure, there are other games with worse penalties for death, and I cut my teeth on the original CRPG's where death often meant the complete loss of a character - but then again, it was awfully tough to get killed to begin with.

There is no way a properly formed party using the proper techniques should go into an area expecting at least one or more party wipes. But listening to other players in game, and reading other messages across the forums, this is exactly what the Dungeons bring about. At this point, I don't see EotN being a viable place to bring my Survivor character. I don't care if I get to keep the max title even after suffering a death - I just hate dying in any form, and always played trying to keep all my characters from death long before the title system even came about. Thus far, I just have one out of 22 characters across two accounts who has reached the second tier of the title (the first one was killed in the Dunes of Despair halfway to the second tier because of a boneheaded mistake on my part).

I mentioned in a post dealing with the game's AI how frustrating it is to see several different hostile mobs of different races completely ignore each other only to swarm my little old party who simply desires to get from Point A to Pooint B. This really breaks any emmersion I might have in the game, and would like to see much more combative interaction between differing mobs such as some of the minor displays we get in the Jahai Bluffs and Southern Shiverpeak areas.

However, one of the other real solutions here is not for Anet to power up the offensive capabilities of higher level mobs (although the monster specific skills are a plus and we need more of them IMO), and add more numbers of them. What really needs to be done is to increase the defensive capabilities of the monsters, thus making them harder to kill, but offer damage bonuses for attack combinations and skill sets used by a character and party. I don't have all the specifics for this idea yet, but am writing them down and will post here later. Suffice it to say, I hope that some serious balance changes take place in the Expansion - if I wanted to play Hard Mode, I would and if I wanted to experience regular full party wipes, I would visit the elite missions.

I've had the same frustrating problem with the popup monsters that fill your screen with red dots and spawning at a rez shrine right under the feet of the mob you were trying to run from.

I bet he's doing Shards of Orr.

Game is easy, please stop crying about the difficulty. The hardest monsters in the entire GW arsenal are the new dinosaurs. Destroyers are simple, charr are surprisingly easy. Please, rune up your heroes and win the game.

do you want the honest reason why you're finding it difficult? because you suck.

meaning DoA? does the world domain of ANGUISH as well as ELITE area mean anything to you? as for the rest of nightfall...it's currently the most balanced campaign in the series, unlike factions with its 200+ melee hitters in HM

but as far as gwen goes...have you ever considered the possibility that this is an online game? meaning...you play online with other PEOPLE? not h/h?
I was able to go through all of gwen with partly just me and heroes, and partly me and another person both with heroes. well, we got a human team for the last mish cuz we weren't sure what we were up against...but looking back it was pathetically easy.
as far as the pops...
1) PULL
2) PULL some more
3) learn from your mistakes. if you pop a lot of creatures, when you rez just go back and pull them apart. and from then on go slowly. it's not called a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing dungeon because it's a meadow where you can run around all day long as fast as you can.

in fact, though it may be getting "harder", it's also getting more balanced...a good smart team is able to do anything, as opposed to a specifically designed idiot noob team that may as well be bots.

for me, the hardest single enemy type is the angorodons. and they're not hard so much as just annoying as hell.
well, getting hit by 2 SH's and 5 SF's in the burning forest wasn't a walk in the park either...but that is easily visually the best area in GWEN...it's just AWESOME.

i've had no problem going through the games with henchies only for prophecies and factions and later, heroes with nf and eotn.

what profession are you and what team builds are you using? if you're having that much trouble, there's probably something we can help fix. if you just insist on complaining but not give any real information, it makes it hard to help you.

Default Trial and Error

Aside from the U suks posts, it is alot of trial and error. I still haven't beaten Bison in the tourney yet. I finally completed the one with all the worms, frostmaw, I think. I ran it twice and had to quit because I took the hard way around and got swamped. I had to beat the last 3 worms with all 60% penalty.

I usually have R-my character, Olias, a Rit hero, General M, and then a warrior, 2 monks, and fire ele. It is alot of: clear small area, flag party to that small area, pull mobs to the party, continue until all monsters are dead.
